Benefits of Squeezing Dogs Anal Glands?

Recently, we took my yellow lab to the vet and I was perplexed. The vet squeezed my dogs anal glands. He said she was full and they really needed to be done. What is this and why should it be done? What causes a build up of “gunk” in her anal glands? What is the “gunk”?

Well, I didn’t mean that I did it myself. I wouldn’t do it. I let the vet do it. I didn’t know anything about it until I took her last week.

How to Express a Dog’s Anal Glands

Expressing a dog’s anal glands is the unpleasant but often necessary practice of squeezing each gland to expel their contents, which alleviates any pain and discomfort the dog may be experiencing. It keeps them clean and free from infection. If your dog has a problem releasing the stink glands they will become infected and then they have to have surgery to remove them. So squeazing them seems like a much better option, no?

The gunk is a highly poisonous toxin that can infiltrate through the dogs colon and cause cancer and other diseases. Only a veteran vetrinarian should do it, though.

well as a groomer, anal glands are good to get done every 3 months or so, they can get irritated and cuase major infections down there sometimes, if they are not squeezed!

Usually, dogs express their own anal glands when they have a bowel movement. There are two glands that are used by the dogs to say, I was here too!. Much like marking with urine.
But, sometimes, the dog, for whatever reason, can not do this as a natural expression, sort of speak. when this happens the glands keep generating this really smelly gunk and if not expressed, will cause discomfort for the dog. Symptoms usually are scooting their rear across the floor or lawn. If not taken care of, the anal sacs can actually explode, like a blow out on a tire. This is quite painful for the dog and the dog will need medical attention. Personally, I like leaving the expressing of glands to vets, although it is not uncommon whatsoever, for groomers to perform this procedure as well.

well see my dogs hsve to get their butts squeezed too they do this because the doo doo so much and sometimes they have diarria and the fluids come out and sometimes when they use the bathroom they drag their butts on the ground because it bothers them it itches …. my dogs do this alot!!

  6. There are two glands on both side of the dogs "behind area". The anal glads are used in a dog to lubercate the stool to ease out. In some cases the glads get plugged from their stool not being firm enough. The could also be plugged from loose stools. Basically the "gunk" is a form of puss. You would rather have the vet do this because of the smell that comes out. If this is not done the dog might "slam" his behind against you floor to release the glads. Which means that "smell" is now in your house.

My dog had to get her anal glands squeezed because she had some kind of infection and supposedly it drains whatever it is that causes the infection.

Sometimes, for various reasons, the dogs anal sacs may become blocked. When this happens a number of problems might develop. Some are benign as a foul smell but the can lead to serious problems like diarrhea and infection. To intervene before a blocked anal gland becomes an issue, the glands must be expressed.
