Recently, we took my yellow lab to the vet and I was perplexed. The vet squeezed my dogs anal glands. He said she was full and they really needed to be done. What is this and why should it be done? What causes a build up of “gunk” in her anal glands? What is the “gunk”?
Well, I didn’t mean that I did it myself. I wouldn’t do it. I let the vet do it. I didn’t know anything about it until I took her last week.

It keeps them clean and free from infection. If your dog has a problem releasing the stink glands they will become infected and then they have to have surgery to remove them. So squeazing them seems like a much better option, no?
The gunk is a highly poisonous toxin that can infiltrate through the dogs colon and cause cancer and other diseases. Only a veteran vetrinarian should do it, though.
well as a groomer, anal glands are good to get done every 3 months or so, they can get irritated and cuase major infections down there sometimes, if they are not squeezed!

There are two glands on both side of the dogs "behind area". The anal glads are used in a dog to lubercate the stool to ease out. In some cases the glads get plugged from their stool not being firm enough. The could also be plugged from loose stools. Basically the "gunk" is a form of puss. You would rather have the vet do this because of the smell that comes out. If this is not done the dog might "slam" his behind against you floor to release the glads. Which means that "smell" is now in your house.
