See Chows are smarter then all other dogs, what your Chow is doing is typical of trying to outsmart the owner. He goes and chases the cars aka "enemy" away when YOU look at him because he wants you to think hes "hard at work" guarding the house when your not home... when in actuality hes snoozing in the sun:)

I would suggest putting him on a leash when your outside. Leash correct him when he "fixates" (stares) at a car or goes for it. Once he's learned not to react on a 6' lead, move to a 15' lead and do the same. Give a verbal command (like NO or STOP) in a firm voice just before correcting him with the lead. Eventually he'll learn off lead to respond to that command.

Lol, he's a dog.

He's looking for your approval. Actually, since he IS looking for your reaction. Not giving him one is probably best. Just ignore him. If he starts barking etc. Walk away or turn your back.

Totally normal, and unless your worried about a doggy trail in the grass. Don't worry about it haha.

sounds like the dog is out to prove his devotion to you. lol.

try walking outside and as soon as he starts barking, quickly go back into the house. don't give him attention (not even negative attention) as that's exactly what the dog's looking for. that means no scolding, no contact w/ him, no looking at him, just a straight bee line for the house. it might take a while to sink in, but the dog will begin to understand that barking and chasing away evil "owner-eating" cars will not yield a reward to him in any way shape or form.
