My personal picks are Wellness Core, Innova Evo or Nature's Variety Instincts. A new line that looks decent is Merrick's B.G. (Before Grain). I agree with some of the foods listed here but not all.
I don't know of any dry food that's especially healthy but the ones I've listed are the better ones.

If your cat is ill or recovering from an illness, there are supplements you can look into for immune system health. I *think* there's something called Transfer Factor. I recall seeing that name come up often in a group to which I belong. And perhaps coq10....

Okay, look, my cats came from a shelter and were kibble junkies too since that's all they were fed. I was not about the let them go on eating kibble b/c I wanted them to be raw fed. So, I had to feed them straight kibble for a day or two and I fed it to them as two separate meals (no free feeding). Then, I started adding a tiny bit of canned food and slowly increased the amount of canned to dry until they were just eating the canned. That took about a week. Then, I added more and more ground, raw turkey to the canned until they were just eating raw turkey. That took another week.

1.No dairy

2.Go easy on the fish products (fish aren't a natural part of a cat's diet - my cats only get fish about once a week, usually canned sardines)

3. If you are going to feed a commercial diet, please choose a food with meat as the first ingrdient such as: Castor & Pollux Organix Feline Formula, Wellness, California Natural, Honest Kitchen, Wysong Anergen Canine & Feline Diet, Natural Balance Ultra Premium, Wysong Archetype Canine & Feline Diets, ZiwiPeak Daily Cat Cuisine, Newman's Own Organics, Halo Spot's Stew Dry Cat Food, Timberwolf Serengeti Herbal Feline, Chicken Soup for the Cat Lover's Soul, Natural Planet Organics, Blue Buffalo Spa Selects, Blue Buffalo Blue Organics, or Solid Gold.

4. Don't leave food down all of the time for her to free feed. Cat's are hunters, not grazers and tend to abuse the priviledge of free feeding and become overweight. Feed her 3x/da until s/he's at least 5mos old, then feed her/him 2x/da.

5. Make at least one of the meal a high quality, grain-free canned food such as: Wellness (excluding the Chicken & Lobster, Sardine, Shrimp & Crab and Salmon & Trout Formulas), Nature’s Variety, Wysong Au Jus All Meats, Innova Evo Canned (**Please note that this food is very high in phosphorus and would not be a good food choice for any cat that is showing signs of renal insufficiency), Avoderm Select Cuts, Solid Gold Blended Tuna, Canine Caviar Canned Food for Cats and Dogs, ZiwiPeak Daily Cat Cuisine Canned Food, and Halo Spot's Stew for Cats.

6. Feed her a natural diet:

Commercially available raw diets are: Nature's Variety Raw Food Diets, Nature's Logic Raw Food Diets, Primal Pet Foods Raw Cat Food, Bravo Raw Food Diets, Raw Advantage, Northwest Naturals Raw Cat Food, Wild Kitty, Aunt Jeni's, Oma's Pride, Primal Pet Foods, Steve's Real Food, or Bravo!. Or, you can make your own. It is very simple and you will spend less on a raw diet than you would on pets food and save tons of money on vets bills (ie no need for dental cleanings).

My cats have enjoyed: chicken (wings, ribs, necks, meat, skin, eggs, hearts, livers, gizzards), turkey (meat, hearts, liver, gizzard), duck (wings, ribs, meat), quail frames, ostrich (ground w/ bone and liver), beef (meat, heart, and liver), veal, lamb, pork, goat, rabbit, canned sardines, canned mackerel w/ bone, and canned salmon w/ bone.

There really aren't any foods that are specifically designed to strengthen the immune system, but a high quality food will enable a cat to be more healthy and therefore their immune system will benefit. Innova Evo is one such premium brand. Most dry cat food has to have a lot of fillers, additives and other junk added just to get it into a kibble state and to prolong its shelf life. Look at the ingredients on the bag. They are listed in order of volume. The first ingredient should be some sort of animal meat, not grains. The supermarkets typically sell the 'cheap' food with terrible ingredients. If you go to a pet store or shop online, you can find better quality foods.

If your cat is in good health, any good brand of cat food will supply all the vitamins and nutrients that are needed to maintain it. If your cat has been ill or underweight, I suggest that you ask the vet what supplements should be given.

My cat loves the Science Diet dry food. It is a little on the expensive side, but it keeps him healthy.
