But at ten years she is definitely a 'senior' cat :-) About changing your cat's diet, you can give it a little less, reducing the amount by a spoonful every few days until it is the amount you want her to have, then stick with that. Also, if you feed her biscuits, there are some kinds which have less fat, so you could try and change to those. If it's possible, you could also try to get her to play a little bit more, especially running/chasing (if she is interested), because a little exercise is good even for an older cat. The vet said I could also offer him vegetables like green beans, but Mr. Fluffy only liked fresh spinach -- particularly if he could steal it out of the grocery bag as soon as I got home. Average age for cats is 14 years. Outside cats live an average of 5 years LESS. Remember, average means some are more and some are less, but this is the middle. According to my vet, you HAVE to change their eating habits (its been harder FOR ME than the cat I think). Actually, its 4:00am and she just woke me up for food (again). The vet told me she would stop this...NOT YET. HA. Apparently-they only need 1/3 C of dry food a day. I am working toward that goal, but have been feeding 1/3 in am and 1/3 in pm. I keep the measuring cup in the bag (so I wont cheat). I also got those rub on vitamins (like an ointment-you rub on their paw and they lick off). You could use that is lue of a feeding I suppose. Personally, I haven't seen any results (wt loss) yet (though I have been giving 2/3 per day at this point)-its been about 1 month. The vet did recommend giving a few dry chips if they beg-but its better to break the behavior (of freq feedings). No wet food (apparently not necessary). ... Everyone Ive talked to says is training the owner, not the cat! I guess that's why she's waking me up at 4:00am huh? haha! Some cats are fine eating whatever they want but some will gorge themselves. If a cat needs to lose weight, you need to ration the food out. I feed mine twice a day and she's fine with it.
